“It’s important to read up on law firms of course, but it’s also nice to get some friendly advice from a Maastricht graduate. I had a wonderful time at the European Law School at Maastricht University between 1999 and 2003. To be honest, I didn’t have a clue about Linklaters until I actually started working for a Luxembourg-based firm in Amsterdam. It was word of mouth really. I heard Linklaters had an office in Amsterdam and that you had the chance to grow and evolve with the firm as part of a global team. I joined in October 2005 and it’s been a fascinating experience ever since: I can see first-hand how everything is developing and how career opportunities are rapidly unfolding.

I’m working in our Regulatory area which is part of our finance practice. It is a very detailed and regulated area of law and it’s constantly changing, so the professional and personal challenges are immense. Linklaters is an energetic firm and there’s an open door culture – so if you have a question, you can ask anyone. People do work hard here, but it’s a question of priorities. If you want to do well, and learn as much as possible, you have to take responsibility for yourself. In return, you are really trusted and supported to do a good job.

It’s a very international office, with colleagues from all kinds of countries and backgrounds. I definitely see my future with Linklaters and I’m aiming to become an expert in international finance transactions.”
